The End Has Come
Since this is The Haiku Project 2010, and it's now January 17 2011, I think we can say that the project has concluded. Successfully, from my point of view, because I did write more this year than I have for a while. Those of you (if there is anyone out there) who might like to tag along can do so at the continuation of the project, The Haiku Project 2011.

Outside my windows,
Snow so thick I cannot see
Even the railroad track

“A long December...”
Not so long as in years past.
The years seem short now.
Not so long as in years past.
The years seem short now.

Outside, cold wind, ice.
Inside, a different chill,
When we are apart.
Inside, a different chill,
When we are apart.

Snow snaking across
The street. Cars slow, crawl past as
I watch from my desk.

Gray skies, gray days coming.
But spring will come, too.

But spring will come, too.

There’s much work to do,
But I see sun and blue skies
And I do not care.
But I see sun and blue skies
And I do not care.

And Zevon’s singing
“Disorder in the House.” Now,
Play it when I die.

Play it when I die.

One more sleepless night.
They come more often these days,
When I am alone.
They come more often these days,
When I am alone.

Each night, freight trains pass.
In another life, I might have
Been riding along.

Some days I wonder
If the world is just a dream.
Then, I see my wife.
If the world is just a dream.

Late at night, thunder.
No rain, just the distant threat
Of a storm to come.
